She died from a stroke while she was getting dressed to attend a Mother & Daughter Banquet at Riverside Church. Her granddaughter, Arleen Lois Smith had talked to her five minutes before she found her dead - sitting in her rocking chair in her bedroom with her shoes neatly placed before her on the floor. She was terribly deaf in her later years and wore a hearing aid. She was a gentle, soft spoken, deeply religious woman whom everyone liked very much.
